Why Natural Gemstones Are Never Identical
Why Natural Gemstones Are Never Identical
One of the questions we are often asked is why two beads made from the same gemstone can look slightly different.
The answer is simple: nature doesn't make identical stones.
Every natural gemstone has formed through geological processes over thousands or even millions of years. During that time, changes in temperature, pressure and mineral composition create the colours, patterns and inclusions that make each piece unique.
Nature Doesn't Follow a Pattern
Unlike manufactured materials, natural gemstones are not produced to a specification.
Even stones taken from the same block can display noticeable differences in colour, banding, crystal structure or mineral inclusions.
This individuality is one of the reasons natural gemstones have been admired throughout history.
What Are Inclusions?
Inclusions are naturally occurring features found within gemstones. They may appear as tiny crystals, mineral veins, colour variations or other characteristics formed during the stone's geological history.
In most cases, inclusions are not considered defects. Instead, they help tell the story of how the stone formed.
Colour Can Vary Naturally
The colour of a gemstone depends on its mineral composition and the conditions under which it formed.
As a result, no two pieces of Lapis Lazuli, Labradorite, Rhodochrosite or many other gemstones will ever look exactly the same.
What This Means for Handmade Jewellery
When we create a handmade charm bead, we work with the natural material rather than trying to make every bead identical.
We carefully shape and polish each bead to showcase the stone's individual character, allowing its natural beauty to become part of the finished design.
The Beauty of Individuality
Many collectors actively seek natural variation because it means their jewellery is truly unique.
Rather than owning one of thousands of identical products, you receive a bead with its own distinctive colours, patterns and character.
Wolf Beads and Natural Gemstones
Whenever we use natural gemstones, we celebrate the individuality that nature has created. Every handmade bead reflects both the geological history of the stone and the craftsmanship involved in transforming it into jewellery.
