How We Make Handmade Charm Beads in Wales

Every Wolf Beads charm bead begins its journey in our workshop in Wales. Unlike mass-produced jewellery manufactured in large factories, each bead is individually handcrafted by the two of us; Gemma and Russell.

Our goal has always been simple: to create beautiful European-style charm beads that we would be proud to wear ourselves (Gemma has certainly stolen a few of the beads for her own collection!). By combining carefully selected materials with traditional jewellery-making techniques, we produce beads that are designed to become lasting additions to your charm bracelet collection.

Although we work with a variety of natural gemstones and premium created materials, every bead receives the same level of care and attention throughout the making process.

Step 1 – Choosing the Material

Every bead starts with selecting the material. Depending on the design, this may be a natural gemstone, Bello Opal, Aurora Opal, Mosaic Bello Opal or another carefully chosen jewellery material.

Natural gemstones are valued for their individual colours and patterns, while our premium created opals are chosen for their exceptional play of colour and consistency. These are my favourite materials to make pieces from.

Before any work begins, we inspect the material to ensure it is suitable for becoming a Wolf Beads charm bead. When working with natural gemstones; ideally we want something that is free from fractures, pits and other unwanted material defects.

Step 2 – Cutting and Shaping

The selected material is carefully cut and shaped into its final form. Whether we are creating a classic barrel bead, an elegant rondelle, a round bead, a trilliant design or a square pillow profile, precision is essential.

We have grinding machines that help with the rough shaping stage, these involve clamping the material between two rotating jaws and a rough carving wheel to get the first shape in. This stage establishes the proportions of the bead and prepares it for the detailed finishing work that follows.

Step 3 – Drilling the Centre Hole

Each bead is carefully drilled to create the central opening that will later house the sterling silver core.

Accuracy at this stage is important, as the finished bead must accept the silver core while remaining centred and balanced. To achieve this we drill the hole slightly undersized and then use diamond burrs to enlarge the hole to the correct size. This means if the drill bit wandered off center slightly we can reposition to get it as perfectly centered as the material and bead will allow.

Step 4 – Refining and Polishing

Once the basic shape has been created, the bead is gradually refined using progressively finer abrasives. This is another machine that has wheels of various grits mounted, we then hand hold the material and press it against these wheels to shape and polish the beads. It is a slow process as we need to ensure that scratches are completely removed before moving on to the next grit.

This stage removes small imperfections and creates smooth, even curves that feel comfortable in the hand and sit beautifully on a bracelet.

The bead is then polished to reveal the full beauty of the material. The wheels here are slightly flexible allowing us to smooth out the surface further.

Natural gemstones begin to display their unique colours and patterns, while created opals reveal the vibrant flashes of colour that make them so distinctive.

This transformation is one of our favourite parts of the entire process as the materials really start to come alive, the depth, colours and surface shine all start to come together to make a beautiful piece of art work.

Step 6 – Fitting the Sterling Silver Core

After polishing, the bead is fitted with a solid 925 sterling silver core. This is the most nerve racking part of the whole process; after hours of work which could all be wasted; using a hammer and a dapping block and punch set the core is inserted into the bead checked for the fit an them hammered to set it in place. Occasionally a too heavy hammer blow, a slightly too fragile or hidden fracture in the material and the piece shatters. But with just the right swing the core is perfectly set, and gets a re-polish to remove any marks from setting.

We use solid sterling silver because it offers durability, an attractive finish and compatibility with most European-style charm bracelet systems.

The finished core is designed to fit bracelets from brands such as Pandora®, Trollbeads®, OHM®, Chamilia® and many other similar systems.

Step 7 – Final Inspection

Before any bead leaves our workshop, it receives a final inspection.

We check the finish, the polish, the silver core and the overall appearance to ensure it meets the standards we expect from every Wolf Beads creation.

Only once we are happy with the finished result is the bead prepared for photography or carefully packaged for its new owner.

Why Handmade Matters

Working by hand means every bead develops its own character. Natural gemstones contain their own unique patterns, while created opals display individual flashes of colour that change depending on the light.

Rather than trying to make every bead completely identical, we celebrate these subtle differences. They are part of what makes handmade jewellery so rewarding to collect.
