Made-to-Order Charm Beads: How the Process Works

Made-to-Order Charm Beads: How the Process Works

Our made-to-order charm beads give you the opportunity to choose the material, shape and size of a bead rather than selecting one individual finished bead from our ready-made collection.

Each bead is then made individually for your order in our workshop in Wales, using the specifications you have selected.

Because these beads are handmade, the finished bead will not be an exact copy of a photograph or another bead we have previously made. Instead, it will be a unique piece made to your chosen specifications.

What Does Made-to-Order Mean?

With a ready-made bead, you are buying the specific bead shown or described on the product page.

With a made-to-order bead, the product listing provides the available options and you choose the combination you want.

This may include the material, bead shape, overall size and other available specifications.

The bead is then made after you place your order rather than being selected from existing stock, there is usually a little bit of a wait involved while we make your bead for you.

Choose Your Material

The first part of the process is choosing the material you would like your bead to be made from.

Depending on the particular made-to-order design, this may include natural gemstones, created opals or other materials we work with.

Different materials have their own natural or manufactured variations, so the finished appearance will depend on the material selected.

Choose the Shape

Made-to-order beads can be available in several different shapes.

Depending on the listing, you may be able to choose from options such as barrel, rondelle, round, trillian or square shapes.

It is worth remembering that our shape terminology describes different aspects of the bead. For example, rondelle and barrel describe the edge profile, while trillian and other terms can describe the overall shape when viewed from the side through the core.

Our guide How Charm Beads Work: Shapes, Cores & Bracelet Design explains these differences in more detail.

Choose the Size

You can also choose the size of your made-to-order bead from the options available on the individual listing.

Size affects both the appearance of the bead and how much space it takes up on a bracelet. A larger bead can make a stronger focal point, while smaller beads can work well as part of a larger collection.

For more information about the measurements we use, see Charm Bead Sizes Explained.

What Happens After You Place Your Order?

Once your order has been placed, we use the specifications you selected to make your bead.

The material is prepared and shaped before the bead is finished to the required size and form. The process involves working the material individually rather than simply selecting a pre-existing bead from stock.

The time required can vary depending on the material, design and current workload.

Every Made-to-Order Bead Is Individually Made

Because each bead is made individually, there can be small differences between the finished bead and examples shown in photographs.

This is particularly important with natural gemstones and other materials that have their own variations in colour, pattern and texture.

Even when the same material and specifications are used, two handmade beads will not necessarily look identical.

This individuality is part of what makes a handmade bead different from a mass-produced item.

Why Won't My Bead Look Exactly Like the Photograph?

Some made-to-order listings use photographs of previous beads to show the type of material, colour or finish you can expect.

The photograph is therefore an example rather than a picture of the exact bead you will receive.

Your bead will be made using the options you select, so its exact pattern, colour distribution and other small details may differ from the example shown.

Where a material naturally varies, we cannot guarantee that a particular section of colour or pattern will appear in exactly the same place.

Fitting the Sterling Silver Core

Once the bead itself has been shaped and finished, the solid 925 sterling silver core is fitted.

The core is fitted and finished as part of the handmade process, giving the completed bead a jewellery-quality finish.

Final Finishing and Checking

Before the bead is sent to you, it is finished and checked to make sure it meets the requirements of the order.

We pay particular attention to the shape, finish and silver core, as well as the overall appearance of the completed bead.

As with all handmade work, the finished piece retains the small characteristics that come from being individually made.

Made to Your Choices, Not Mass Produced

The main advantage of made-to-order is the freedom to choose a combination that may not be available as a ready-made bead.

You can select the material, shape and size that best suits your bracelet and your own preferences.

Instead of choosing from whatever happens to be in stock, you are commissioning a bead to be made from the available options.

How Long Does a Made-to-Order Bead Take?

Made-to-order beads require additional time because the bead needs to be made specifically for your order.

The expected processing time may vary depending on the material, design and number of orders we are working on. We will email you once you place an order to confirm the current wait time if this applies to your order.

If you need a made-to-order bead by a particular date, especially for a gift or special occasion, please contact us before ordering so that we can advise whether the timing is suitable.

Can I Request Something Outside the Listed Options?

Our made-to-order listings are still growing. If you have an idea that is not covered by the available choices, you are welcome to contact us before ordering. We may be able to help or suggest an alternative.

Made-to-Order or Ready-Made?

If you want to choose the exact individual bead you will receive, our ready-made beads are the better option. The photographs and description show the specific bead available for purchase.

If you are happy to choose the specifications and have a bead made specifically to those requirements, a made-to-order bead gives you more flexibility.

Both are handmade by us in Wales and fitted with solid 925 sterling silver cores.

Creating Your Made-to-Order Bead

Made-to-order gives you the opportunity to choose a bead that suits your bracelet rather than waiting for the exact combination of material, shape and size to appear in our ready-made collection.

You choose the available options, we make the bead individually and then finish it with its sterling silver core before it makes its way to you.
